Gold Pendant
One of my favorite mementos from my grandmother is a gold pendant that my grandfather brought her when he returned from World War II. My grandparents married young and didn’t have much financially when my grandfather was drafted to serve in World War II. She told me of the letters they wrote to her, and the gold pendant that he brought to her one year while he was on leave for a few weeks and allowed to come home. She added the gold pendant to her favorite chain, and I never saw her without it. When she became ill and it was apparent that she wasn’t going to recover, she gave me the gold pendant to remember both her and my grandfather and the special love they shared. Because I was the oldest grand daughter, and her other grand daughter had never known my grandfather, she felt that it was appropriate to give the gold pendant to me, and it is amongst my most prized possessions. Occasionally I’ll pull it out of the jewelry box and wear it on special occasions, but never for long, because I don’t want anything to happen to the pendant that meant so much to my grandmother and the time she and my grandfather shared together. |
