Have you ever seen someone wearing a gold pendant and you only see the chain sticking out above the person's shirt; then you ask the person, "What's on your gold chain?" The person responds, "It's a Saint Christopher!" The first time that happened to me I felt silly asking the person what a Saint Christopher was, so I just acted like I knew and I gave them a kind nod.
Now that I'm older I realize what this gold pendant means to people who wear it. Saint Christopher was the patron saint of travelers; one who wears the Saint Christopher hopes that somehow through wearing this gold pendant that they will be protected in their travels.
Legend has it that Saint Christopher actually helped Jesus cross a very deep river when Jesus was a child. Many Catholic people cherish the gold pendant that they wear around their neck and they wear it for protection.
I have a friend whose father was lost during the Vietnam War and he wore a gold pendant of Saint Christopher around his neck. My friend now wears this cherished gold pendant as a memorial to her father. |
